Heath Under 23’s completed their season with a win over Division Champions Hassocks U23’s bringing their winning run of 14 games to an end.
The Robins have had a great season winning the league comfortably, winning the County U23 Cup and are in to the semi-final of the League Cup, so the treble is a real possibility and we wish them well.
The Bears season has been a bit up and down, starting well but then going through a sticky patch before finishing strongly.
The visitors started well and should have been in front in the opening minutes when Ethan Cummings back-pass was intercepted by a Hassocks player who played the ball square to a team mate but Sam Smith, making his debut in goal, was out quickly to block the shot, the ball came back to the Robins No. 10 in the centre of the goal and a yard out but with the goal at his mercy he somehow struck the ball against the post and the danger was cleared.
Hassocks took the lead in the 7th minute and it just wasn’t going to be Cummings night when once again he under-hit a back pass to Smith and the Robins No.10 made amends for his earlier miss by taking the ball around Smith and running it into the goal.
Heath responded well and were level within 3 minutes when Wiktor Maznica, making his first start of the season, received a cross-field ball from left to right, cut inside a defender and hammered a left foot shot from the edge of the ‘D’ that flew past the Hassocks goalkeeper showing why he was the SCFL U23 Golden Boot winner last season and it remained 1-1 at the break.
The game flowed from end to end in the second half, the Robins tried their luck with a couple of long range shots that were saved comfortably by Smith while at the other end Harrison Whitelaw was put through on goal but the Hassocks keeper was out quickly to spread himself and save with his legs.
Heath took the lead in the 80th minute when a corner from the left was played into the penalty area to Cummings who lost his marker to strike a right foot volley into the net from 6 yards.
Minutes later it was 3-1 when Maznica went on a dazzling run into the Hassocks penalty area skipping past challenges to fire off a right foot shot that the keeper saved well at the near post. From the resulting corner the ball was swung in towards Cummings who stooped low to score from close range to fully compensate for his earlier mistake.
The visitors scored their second with the last touch of the game when a corner from the right was swung into the goal mouth and turned past Smith from close range.
